Good catch Anthony. Thank you. I transcribed the lap speeds from a contemporary news report. In rechecking, I found that the report had some small rounding errors in converting km/h to m.p.h., and that the printed article erroneously gave the average as 348.08 miles per hour. I come up with 340.11 m.p.h. using the reporter’s m.p.h. numbers, and 340.07645 m.p.h. when converting the km/h average to m.p.h. . . . Checking further, I found that the next issue mentioned the error, saying that it had been discovered after several thousand issues had already been printed. The remainder of the printing run had the “correct” (340.08 m.p.h.) average speed. It would seem that the reference I used was one of the earlier copies.
