Amazing series of Experimental planes from Bell Aircraft contributed much to the advancement of every aspect concerning aerodynamics! In the hands of capable and courageous test pilots like Chuck Yeager, Pete Everest and a host of others ,huge amounts of data was was collected and put to good use! More advanced aircraft such as the X-2 all the way thru the X-15 paved the way to the ultimate orbiter, the Space Shuttle! All this came from a little aircraft shaped like a 50 cal. bullet called the X-1 affectionately called “Glamorous Glennis”..
Let’s not forget the contributions of NACA test pilot Albert Scott Crossfield——the first pilot to exceed Mach 2. Crossfield flew ten flights in the Bell X-1, 77 in the Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket, and 16 captive, glide and powered flights in the North American Aviation X-15. Crossfield made more rocket-powered flights than any other pilot.
