July 1919 — Original caption: 7/1919- Portrait of famous French aviatrix Baroness de la Roche, who was killed Friday when the plane she was flying at Crotoy, France collapsed. This photo of the Baroness was made two weeks ago after she broke the world’s record for altitude reached by a woman, formerly held by Ruth Law. The Baroness is shown standing in front of the machine in which she was killed. She was the world’s first woman flier, having won her pilot’s license in 1910. — Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS
