Lieutenant (junior grade) David S. Ingalls pictured during World War I. On September 24, 1918, Ingalls scored his 5th kill in six weeks flying a Sopwith Camel with 213 Squadron of the British Royal Flying Corps. In so doing he became the U.S. Navy’s first fighter ace.
